Overview
FVSU is Georgia’s only 1890 land-grant institution, is part of the ÐÔÊÓ½çAPP and is a fully accredited, comprehensive, four-year institution committed to providing strong academic programs, online courses and extracurricular activities to students. The University provides instruction, research, and public and extension services, consistent with its land-grant and public functions, for all segments of the population to achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals. As part of its commitment to excellence, the university has produced more African-Americans with mathematics degrees than any other college in the nation in two of the past three years.
The university’s 2,500-plus students represent 136 of Georgia’s 159 counties and every bordering state. Ninety percent of the student body is African American. Eighty percent of students are aged 24 and under.
FVSU conducts more federally-funded science, technology, engineering and math research than any other public teaching university in the state of Georgia and is fifth among Georgia public universities overall.
The university offers bachelor’s degrees in 29 majors – popular majors, include biology, criminal justice and psychology - as well as eight master’s degree programs.
The university has the only certified veterinary technology program in the state.
FVSU was named the top public HBCU in Georgia in 2018 & 2019 by U.S. News and World Report.
FVSU’s mathematics, engineering technology, family and consumer sciences, computer and information sciences, psychology and history degree programs all rank in the top ten in Georgia for producing the most African-Americans with bachelor’s degrees.
Fort Valley State University’s Cooperative Developmental Energy Program (CDEP) teams with major oil and energy companies across the nation to launch the careers of minorities and women in the industry. CDEP, the only program of its kind in the nation, offers dual degrees in math, engineering, chemistry, biology, health physics and geoscience and partners with companies such as Exxon Mobil, Shell, and Georgia Power.
FVSU had an economic impact of more than $109 million during FY 2014.
