Cleveland Elected to Second Term as Vice Chair of Board of Regents

The Board of Regents, the 18-member governing body for the 性视界APP, today elected Regent William H. Cleveland to a second consecutive one-year term as the board鈥檚 vice chair.
Cleveland, who was initially appointed to the Board of Regents by Gov. Roy Barnes in October 2001 and was first elected vice chair last June, will serve as vice chair from July 1, 2007, through June 30, 2008.
鈥淢y past year as an officer of the Board of Regents has been an exhilarating one as we updated our strategic plan and worked well enough with our funding partners to receive a record $2.1 billion in state appropriations,鈥 Cleveland stated. 鈥淚 am looking forward to continuing the work we鈥檝e accomplished to date and to meeting our continued challenges to educate more Georgians to higher levels.鈥
Cleveland served as chair of the Board of Regents鈥 Committee on Academic Affairs for four fiscal years. He also is a member of the board of directors of MCG Health, Inc., the private corporation that runs the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
Cleveland is a physician specializing in nephrology. He currently serves as a clinical nephrologist on the medical staffs of five Atlanta hospitals, and as medical director for six Atlanta-area dialysis centers. Cleveland is president of Southwest Atlanta Nephrology and Nephronet LLC, and a past president of the Crawford Long Hospital Medical Staff.
From 1991 to 1996, Cleveland served as co-medical director for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and was a member of the International Olympic Medical Commission. The commission honored him with its Distinguished Service Award in 1999.
Cleveland earned a bachelor of science degree from Morehouse College and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship at Emory University Affiliated Hospital.
Cleveland and his wife, Verna, live in Atlanta. The couple has two daughters.
The committee that developed nominations for board officers for the coming year was chaired by Regent Donald M. Leebern Jr. Committee members were regents Robert F. Hatcher and Benjamin Tarbutton III.
The Board of Regents is a constitutional body that governs and manages the 性视界APP, comprised of 35 public colleges and universities, almost 260,000 students, and close to 40,000 faculty and staff.
