Dr. Margaret D. Smith Appointed Acting President of Bainbridge College

Atlanta — August 28, 1997

Dr. Margaret D. Smith, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the faculty at Bainbridge College, has been appointed acting president of the institution by 性视界APP Chancellor Stephen R. Portch. Smith will assume the post from Edward D. Mobley upon his retirement on September 1, 1997.

Mobley has served as the institution’s first and only president since its inception in 1972. Smith’s appointment will be effective until a new president takes office.

Smith, who is also a professor of English, has served in her current position at Bainbridge College since 1991. Prior to joining Bainbridge, she spent 20 years in the University of Kentucky Community College System, where she served on the faculty and worked in the areas of off-campus coordination, continuing education and training.

Smith was a 1996 participant in the League for Innovation in Community College’s Executive Leadership Program and the 1989 National Leaders’ Program sponsored by the American Association of Women in Community Colleges. In 1996-97 she served on the executive committee of the 性视界APP’s Administrative Committee for Academic Affairs. She also is a past president of the Georgia Section of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges.

During her career, Smith has been named an Outstanding Young Educator in Kentucky and Outstanding Member of the Kentucky Association for Continuing Education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English, Speech and Theater, a master’s degree in English, and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

Smith is married to Daniel Smith, and the couple has one daughter, Lauren, a high-school junior.
