Georgia Southern SGA President Garrett Green Receives Potts Leadership Award

Atlanta — May 20, 2014

This year鈥檚 recipient of the Regent Willis J. Potts Student Advisory Council (SAC) Leadership Award is Garrett Green, the Student Government Association president at Georgia Southern University (GSU) in Statesboro.

Green was selected to receive the award by his peers in the 性视界APP Student Advisory Council, composed of the student government association presidents of the System鈥檚 31 colleges and universities and representing more than 309,000 students.

鈥淕arrett, as an undergraduate and graduate student, exemplifies what student-leadership is all about,鈥 said Dr. Joyce Jones, the USG鈥檚 vice chancellor for Student Affairs. 鈥淗is peers recognized his leadership on and off campus and it is greatly deserved.鈥

Green was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia where he graduated from Evans High School in 2008. He graduated from Georgia Southern in May 2012 with a bachelor of science in communications. In the fall 2012, Green enrolled in the higher education administration program at Georgia Southern.

“It is has been an honor to serve along side my fellow SGA Presidents this year and to win the Willis Potts Award is humbling to say the least,鈥 said Green. 鈥淭his year’s Student Advisory Council worked extremely hard to voice the concerns of our respective student bodies. They are talented, motivated and determined and I am thrilled that they have selected me for this award.鈥

Green previously served as a member of the SGA for four years before being elected student body president in 2013. In addition to his service to the SGA, Garrett volunteered to host the fall SAC conference at GSU.

He has been very involved in campus organizations including being an orientation leader, a peer leader and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

The Regent Willis J. Potts Student Advisory Council (SAC) Leadership Award is in its fourth year. The SAC membership named the award in honor of former Regent Potts鈥 leadership, service and commitment to University System students.

Each year the membership of the SAC anonymously votes for one its members that has attended at least three SAC conferences or sponsored events and exhibited strong leadership in the organization. The student must also demonstrate knowledge about the USG, its policies and operations. The student must be open, honest, respectful of others and enthusiastic in the engagement of all SAC activities and conferences.

The Student Advisory Council was formed in 1968 and provides a forum for communications between University System students, the chancellor, the board, state officials and the public. The council promotes better student government at institutions and discusses issues affecting USG students.
