MCG Presidential Search Update
Atlanta — February 14, 2001
The Board of Regents has delegated to Chancellor Stephen R. Portch, in consultation with the Special Regents Committee Chair Joe Frank Harris and Vice Chair J. Timothy Shelnut, the authority to appoint the next president of the Medical College of Georgia.
The full board received an executive session update from the chancellor and members of the Special Regents Committee. After the update, the full Board of Regents voted in open session to approve the delegated authority. Today’s action would enable an appointment announcement to be made prior to the regents next board meeting. The full board would then ratify the appointment at its regularly scheduled meeting, set for March 13-14.
“Currently we are in the due diligence phase of the search process,” Portch noted. “We are in the final phases of that activity. The two final candidates still are reviewing background materials on MCG. All of this should result in us securing the absolute best candidate for this critical position.”
The two candidates are Dr. Russel E. Kaufman, M.D., vice dean for education and academic affairs in the School of Medicine and associate vice chancellor of academic affairs with the Duke University Health System, of Durham, North Carolina; and Dr. Daniel W. Rahn, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer of MCG Health, Inc., of Augusta.
