Shelnut Elected Vice Chair of Board of Regents

The Board of Regents of the 性视界APP today elected Regent J. Timothy Shelnut to a one-year term as the vice chair of the 18-member governing body for the state鈥檚 public colleges and universities.
Shelnut will assume this leadership role on July 1, 2004, and serve through June 30, 2005. He was originally appointed to the Board of Regents in 2000. At the time of his appointment as a regent, Shelnut resigned his seat on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Lottery Corporation, where he worked on issues addressing the financing of public education for Georgia students.
鈥淎s a strong believer in the value of public education, I am firmly dedicated to the mission and work of the Board of Regents,鈥 said Shelnut. 鈥淚 look forward to serving in the new leadership role to which I have been elected.鈥
Shelnut has extensive experience in the financial-services industry, having owned and run several companies including: Washington Annuity Sales, Shelnut Properties, LTD., and Four Seasons Securities, a marketing company that specializes in retirement planning and securities.
In addition to serving on the Board of Regents, Shelnut has a history of philanthropic service. In 1998, he was a recipient of the National Philanthropist of the Year award. He was the first donor to contribute $1 million to Augusta鈥檚 University Hospital to support its juvenile diabetes program. Recently, he donated property valued at $600,000 to the Columbia County Board of Education, on which a new middle school has been constructed.
Shelnut has served on the board of trustees of Paine College, a historically black institution in Augusta, and also has served as chairman of the Augusta State University Foundation Board. He also has served on the boards of numerous other organizations, including MCG Healthcare, Inc.; the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation; the American Red Cross; the Augusta Prep Day School; the Morris Museum; the University Hospital Foundation; and the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area. Shelnut resides in Augusta, Ga., with his wife, Virginia. He has three daughters and two sons.
The Board of Regents is a constitutional body that governs and manages the 性视界APP. The USG鈥檚 34 institutions presently enroll more than 247,000 students and employ approximately 35,000 faculty and staff.
