Two Finalists Named For MCG Presidency

Atlanta — February 1, 2001

Two finalists for president of the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) were announced today by the Board of Regents and Chancellor Stephen R. Portch.

The finalists, in alphabetical order, are as follows:

  • Dr. Russel E. Kaufman, M.D., vice dean for education and academic affairs in the School of Medicine and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs with the Duke University Health System, Durham, NC. Kaufman also is currently a professor of medicine and an associate professor of biochemistry at Duke. He has held a wide variety of academic, professional and administrative posts during his 24-year career at Duke. Kaufman has been the recipient of a number of major research grants and awards. A specialist in internal medicine, Kaufman has devoted much of his career to cancer research and treatment. He earned a B.S. in zoology and biochemistry from Ohio State University, his M.D., Cum Laude from Ohio State University’s College of Medicine and undertook his postgraduate training at the Duke University Medical Center.

  • Dr. Daniel W. Rahn, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer, MCG Health, Inc., Augusta, Ga. and vice dean for clinical affairs and director of the Center for Healthcare Improvement at MCG. Rahn also is a full time faculty member at MCG’s School of Medicine. He began his professional career at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn. in 1979, where he earned his undergraduate, medical and graduate degrees. In 1991 he came to MCG, where he has served in a number of academic and administrative positions, before assuming his current position with MCG Health, Inc. in 2000. He is a noted national expert on Lyme Disease, for which he has received a number of research grants. Rahn has served as a volunteer on a number of medical missions to Ukraine, Ecuador and Nigeria.

Both finalists have been active on campus, regional and national committees and have a published and lectured extensively on their specialties.

The Board of Regents is expected to make the appointment at either its February or March meeting.
