The Core IMPACTS General Education Curriculum
The Core IMPACTS General Education Curriculum provides foundational knowledge in academic disciplines, exposing students to diverse learning perspectives and ways of knowing in Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Courses in the General Education Curriculum are required of all students and are (mostly) not dependent on students’ majors.
The current Core IMPACTS General Education Curriculum contains 42 hours of coursework arranged across seven domains (Institution, Mathematics, Citizenship, Humanities, Writing, STEM, and Social Sciences). In addition, students will take 18 hours in Field of Study Pre-requisites designed to specifically prepare a student for entry into their major.
The overall design of the Core IMPACTS General Education Curriculum is the same at all ÐÔÊÓ½çAPP (USG) institutions, although the courses offered in each domain may vary. Courses taken to fulfill USG Core IMPACTS General Education requirements transfer from one institution to another, even if the courses are not the same. As an example, this means that a course that counts for 3 credits in the Social Sciences Domain at one institution counts for 3 credits in the Social Sciences Domain at any other USG institution. (See also Transfer Hub.)
Board of Regents policies and guidelines published in the Academic and Student Affairs Handbook ensure that the common structure of the Core IMPACTS General Education Curriculum is maintained at all USG institutions. USG’s Council on General Education has approved System Domain Outcomes for each of the seven domains of the Core IMPACTS curriculum that every course in a particular domain must meet. All new courses proposed for inclusion in any of the seven domains of the Core IMPACTS Curriculum at any USG institution or any changes to System Domain Outcomes for any domain must be approved by the Council on General Education.
